Kamo no Mabuchi

Kamo no Mabuchi
(1697-1769)
Regarded as one of the four leading scholars of the fukko ('restoration') shinto school, he was a disciple of Kada no Azumamaro. He pursued philological studies of eighth century literature, especially norito and the manyoshu, identifying within these texts an indigenous Japanese spirit of spontaneity which he believed was obscured in all subsequent literature by the introduction of 'foreign' (Chinese and Buddhist) ideas.
